This week’s TOP TIPS from David Shortte.

This week’s TOP TIPS from David Shortte.

The Perth Scorchers season came to an abrupt halt on Thursday night when the Hobart Hurricanes produced their best performance of the season knocking off the league leaders. On Friday night the Adelaide Strikers play host to the Melbourne Renegades at the Adelaide Oval in what should be a magnificent contest. The Strikers will be minus Alex Carey and Billy Stanlake who have been key contributors throughout their campaign but they will still field a very competitive outfit.

The market has the Renegades at $1.95 and the Strikers at $1.87. I will lean towards the Renegades who welcome back experienced campaigner Cameron White. White and Marcus Harris will be the key players at the head of the order for Melbourne. Star West Indians Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard are also potential X-Factor performers for the Renegades in this clash. For the Strikers they will rely heavily on Travis Head and Colin Ingram with the bat and Rashid Khan and Ben Laughlin with the ball. In  novelty bets I will be backing Cameron White most runs Renegades at $3.70, Colin Ingram most runs Strikers at $3.50 and Rashid Khan most wickets Strikers at $2.75.

The T20 Tri Series gets underway at the SCG on Sunday with Australia playing New Zealand. Australia are the $1.73 favourites with England a $2.10 outsider. I like the look of the Aussie outfit and will back them to win. Chris Lynn is an excitement machine and has the ability to win this game off his own bat. I’ll be backing him at $4.50 to be the leading runscorer for Australia. AJ Tye has a fine record in this form of the game and I’m also investing on him at $3.70 to be the leading wicket taker for the home side.

I’ll take a multi with the Perth Wildcats to beat the Adelaide 36ers on Friday night into Melbourne United to cover the line against the Brisbane Bullets and win by 8 points or more. The multi quote is $2.85.

I’ll keep it simple in the A-League and take a multi with Sydney FC to beat Wellington into Adelaide United to beat the Perth Glory. The multi is paying $2.30.

It’s Superbowl time on Monday morning and Tom Brady and the New England Patriots head in as the $1.49 favourites up against the Philadelphia Eagles who are the $2.65 outsiders.

Quite simply Brady and the Patriots have been here and done it while the Eagles have it to do. The Eagles were most impressive in winning through to the Superbowl but New England on Superbowl Day is a daunting task. I’m sticking with the Patriots to win and will be backing Brady to win the MVP at $1.67. In First Touchdown Scorer betting I will have a small bet on Dion Lewis at $9.

I’ll opt for a 3 leg multi which requires Eryk Anders, Marcelo Golm and Tim Means to win their bouts. The multi price is $3.02.

My best bets of the weekend are as follows :

Caulfield Saturday Race 7 Number 9 Bedford (TABtouch Fixed Odds Price $2.20) In-form 4 year old who has had 4 runs this time in for 2 wins and 2 placings. Last start at this track and distance put on a clinic winning by six lengths in dominant fashion. Has won both starts over this distance and has the services of gun Jockey Damian Lane. Looks very hard to stop.

  •  Rosehill Saturday Race 1 Number 7 Charlayne (TABtouch Fixed Odds Price $4.60) : 3 Year Old Filly who made a winning debut at Canterbury a fortnight ago when a comfortable winner over this 1100 metre journey. Steps up in class here but has star Jockey Kerrin McEvoy on board and is carrying just 53.5 kilograms.  Has drawn ideally in barrier one and should be right in the thick of things.
  • Rosehill Saturday Race 9 Number 12 Kaonic (TABtouch Fixed Odds Price $3.20) : Exciting three year old who showed well above average ability in his first campaign when finishing off powerfully to win his last two starts before a break. Resumes from a spell over 1300 metres here and has drawn awkwardly in barrier 12 but is likely to get back anyway and has the turn of foot required to come from back in the pack and swallow them up. Regardless of the result here pop this horse into your black book and keep following.
  •  Ascot Saturday Race 3 Number 9 Sandalwood (TABtouch Fixed Odds Price $2.40): Does possess a powerful finishing sprint which has been evident at his last two starts where he has come home at the rate of knots. Last time out over the 1600 metres here produced a career best effort and only needs to come up with something similar in this to be the horse to beat. The clear danger looks to be number 1 Gomer Wipple and they look the best Quinella of the day.
  •  Mandurah Greyhounds Friday Race 5 Number 2 West On Augie (No Price Available) : Speed machine who broke the first split record at Cannington over the 520 metres last start when running a Best Of Night Time of 29.54. Has won 6 of his 10 career starts and looks to be getting better with every start. Runs into a nice field here but if he runs anywhere near the sectionals he did last week there is nothing that can go with him. On the rise.
